Hello Lovelies, it's a gorgeous day in San Francisco, but as lovely as it is, I can't get one image out of my head:
That's right, our bed.
Instead of roaming around the sunny city yesterday, I pathetically spent most of the day on the couch, tired. Maybe it was life catching up with me - I do pretty much hit the ground running everyday at 6:30am. Or maybe just that time of the month.
But Mr. Spice is starting to wonder if it's something more.
He thinks it's high time we get a new mattress. AND he thinks we need to upgrade to a King.
I am having a hard time fighting against his reasoning. We've had our current mattress for seven years, and with the dog and cat- sometimes there can be four of us in the bed, so going larger wouldn't be a bad idea.
But here's the thing- mattresses are 'spensive.
Especially, organic or eco-friendly mattresses. Man. Those run from $1,000 to $2,000 (or even $5,000).
So here's my question to you- How long should a mattress be good for?
Do you think that a new mattress will get rid of my sleepy head? And do you have any thoughts on the best new mattresses?
Please discuss. I am going to try not do fall asleep at my desk. K, thanks.

We got a new bed about a year ago, but the previous bed we had I bought in college, so it was about 9 years old. I'm not sure how long you're supposed to keep them, but the guy at Sleep Train told us 5 years, but he's a sales guy, so who knows!
We went from a full size to a King and its AMAZING! Totally worth the extra money! Don't forget to factor new bedding into the cost as well. We registered for King stuff on our registry and bought a new bed once we got the new bedding.
I'm not a mattress expert but I think they're supposed to last for around 10 year, no? Not to throw a total curve ball, but perhaps you're pregnant? I don't know from personal experience yet, but three of my girlfriends had the tell-tale exhaustion only to be confirmed a week or two later. I hope that's not too personal; I won't be offended if you delete my comment!
I'm not sure on mattresses, but we might be looking for one soon too. We purchased ours 5 years ago and its just not comfortable anymore. My husband is also pushing for a king size bed even thought we just received a ton of queen sized linens...ack! Also, I love the pillows on your bed! Are they handmade or purchased?
Not sure about mattresses, but I am a firm believer in that when it's not letting you get enough sleep anymore, it's time to invest in a new one. Since you sleep on it every night, having it not be comfortable would be really bad for your well being, so it's money well spent, if you can afford it, I think.
But on a side note, your dog is the CUTEST thing I've ever seen! Love that photo!
@Heidi- you may have just sold me on getting a king.
@BeeHive- let's hope not, but I'll get back to you on that one.
@e.louise- sadly they are purchased from Pottery Barn, but I do love making a good pillow. And yes, I JUST bought new bed stuff for a queen size. Which makes this whole process even more agonizing.
@justaddshoes- yep, our little guy is the cutest, and I am not afraid to say so.
