Hello Lovelies, I am putting out some feelers. I am a bit of a voracious reader. I get lost in a book and sometimes won't look up for days. Poor Mr. Spice has to put up with me until I finish a book at which time, I will pledge to be his wife 100% of the time until I pick up my next book.
I totally enjoyed my latest read, An Object of Beauty by Steve Martin.
I read Shopgirl years ago, and surprisingly liked Steve Martin's lead female character (usually I don't like male authors writing about females). In spite of an air of sadness surrounding the main character, Shopgirl was an easy, totally enjoyable read.
Well, An Object of Beauty is even better. I dove head first into this book and didn't look up until I had frolicked through the entire NYC art scene with Lacey, the main character, an object of beauty herself. While I know next to nothing about art, I am assuming that Martin's take on the rise and fall of contemporary, modern and historic art collecting is fairly accurate as he relates the art scene to real economic events from the 90s to the recent economic collapse. As the beautiful girl who is always granted attention when she enters the room, you don't always love Lacey. But I did find myself routing for her and wishing her only the best- even as she does some not quite legal things and uses men to get ahead (or are they using her?).
Since I feel like I've been less than impressed with the latest and greatest American novels out there today (yes, I am talking about Freedom), I found this book refreshing and enjoyable.
So Lovelies, are you a reader?? While short and sweet, would you like me to review the other books that I've recently read?
PS I am always looking for suggestions for my next novel, anyone??

I'm not sure I could get past envisioning Steve Martin as Father of the Bride enough to read his novels!
The book I most recently read was "The Imperfectionists" buy Tom Rachmann (NYT Bestseller, 2010)
I picked it out for our book club and would give it an 8/10-definitely recommend (especially if you love/know Rome or journalism)
I love to read, and love to see what others are reading!
I love book reviews as I'm always looking for something new to put on my Kindle!
Some books I've read lately...
I tried reading The Outlander and still haven't finished it. It was so slow to me.
I'm currently reading The Help and really like it.
Next up for me is The Hunger Games!
Ugh, I hated Freedom. Hated every single page. Made myself finish it just because I'd slogged through most of it. So glad to hear I'm not the only one!
@lattelove I just downloaded the sample to the Imperfectionists last night- I love anything Rome or Italy!! Thanks for the recommendations.
@Jen. I really liked the Help. I hear the Hunger Games is addicting.
@Samantha. Freedom was so not my cup of tea- glad we aren't alone!!
I got a Kindle for Christmas and it has made me into a reader again. I'm quite happy about that. Sadly, I'm too worried about buying too many books. Don't ask me why. I'm being cheap, but maybe I will break out of it. :) I've heard good things about Steve Martin as a writer. Either way, I sampled The Corrections, and I am thinking of buying it. I've heard that Freedom is not as good.
I just finished Pride & Prejudice since I have not read it since I was 13. I'm now reading Sense & Sensability.
I never read Shopgirl but I did like the movie. Maybe I need to give Steve Martin a try.
I'm currently reading Little Bee. Some of my favorites over the last year have been the Hunger Games Trilogy, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, The Glass Castle, Half the Sky and Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer. I have a huge queue of books at the Library I'm waiting read but I always love suggestions -- particularly when I'm traveling.
@Terru: This is my fear and what's preventing me from making the purchase.
@Micah and Catherine, I read Little Bee. A bit too depressing for my taste. Let me know what you think. Thanks for the other recs!!
As for buying books- I allow myself one $10 plus book a month and the rely on reading what I have or <$5 books on my Nook until the end of the month. Plus, I download a lot of sample books before I purchase one!
