As many of you know, Mr. Spice is in the wine industry in Napa. When we met in January 2006, it meant drinking sparking wine- handmade by Mr. Spice. Going to tastings all over Napa and Sonoma Valley, and escaping the cold weather of San Francisco for some hot heat in wine country. By the time that Fall rolled in 2006, I was already hopelessly in love.
And that's when I was introduced to Harvest.
Mr. Spice calls wine making glorified agriculture, which, obviously, it is. Grapes are just another crop with a season. So here we are, in the season.
During a typical year, sparkling wine grapes start getting picked around August with white and red wine grapes picked just after in September and October. Due to the cold weather this season, everything is a bit delayed.
What does this mean for Mr. Spice, LONG ASS HOURS.
Mr. Spice got home last night around 8pm, went to bed by 9:30pm, and was out the door at 4AM. Yes, I said, 4am.
Basically, Mr. Spice is a zombie this time of year, and I am left to be a Harvest Widow. Technically this is my fifth harvest with Mr. Spice, and each and every year, I am blown away about how much Harvest Rocks My World.
I don't really mind making sure he has breakfast, lunch, and a hot coffee as he leaves the house in the morning, and then making sure that he has a hot dinner when he comes home. What I do mind- are the extra hours in the day. The hours when I am left to my own devices to fill the gaps.
It's always around this time of year that I get bored. I am not afraid to say it- I spend a lot of time with my Husband, and when he isn't home- it just isn't the same.
I am saying all of this to (1) let out some steam (2) get suggestions for what to do with my time- should I get a part time job- I have lots of time and could use the money (3) see if there are another other Job Widow's out there??
Part of me feels like I should be use to this since Papa Sugar is a CPA, but the reality of my/your partner being a work-a-holic seems completely different than a Dad.
Is it December yet? At least he gets a week off between X-mas and New Years.

Ugh - I feel your pain! I dated a farm machinery mechanic in my late teens, and I just didn't see him in the summer time.
I'm currently a rugby widow. My husband plays a match every Saturday, and has training sessions on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings. It didn't use to matter, but now I work from home, I can go a little stir crazy if I'm left alone for too long!
If you could make use of a part-time job, that's always good, but I'd always lean more towards a fun new hobby. We're on a bit of a cash lockdown for the time being, but I'm really keen to start horse riding again, and a couple of us fellow rugby widows have been talking about taking pole dancing lessons!
We live in a small farming community in the middle of nowhere Nebraska, so I feel your pain too. My husband isn't a farmer, but he works for the local Farmer's COOP so his life is taken over by seasons too. I've already realized that I should try to plan to have my children around his work seasons. Anhydrous season starts November 1st here, so I'll be lonely for a month or two.
What I do is hang out with my MIL. What my husband spreads on the fields, my FIL trucks to him, so we try to find things to do together. So my advice is to try to find some other harvest widows to get together to fill the void.
How about a new hobby that you can turn into an etsy store? I say this because I'd love to do that but I'm not crafty at all!
I second @bigapplenosh, an etsy store would be a great idea! And it also gives you the flexibility to do it on your own time, whatever hours you want. You probably can't get that with a side job.
An Etsy store would be cool! I third this suggestion! :) My husband works 12 hour days almost all of the time (Although 4am to 8pm is A LOT!).I think the only child in me doesn't mind the long hours by myself as much. I think it's great that you do little things to make this rough part of the year easier for him. :)
Hello, Opera Widow here! There are weeks and months on end when my husbands also working 12+ hour days and we pass each other like ships in the night.
I highly recommend starting a hobby or a hobby business. I'm just getting into Letterpress and it'll keep me busy while hubby is in Europe for 3 months auditioning.
I don't see Micah at the beginning and end of every school year. I also don't see him when his band is recording CDs. The practices for the recording, the recording, the mixing, the shows to promote the CD.
I 4th the Etsy shop. :)
