So this baby is going to need stuff- apparently, a lot of stuff.
The good news is that we are/have been getting a lot of free stuff from friends with older babies!! Awesome.
I'd write a review on all the items that we are getting and/or registering for, but I am pretty sure that we'd all appreciate it if I wait until I have the baby and try the stuff out before I review it.
One item that I am almost positive that we are going to have to buy on our own. Cloth Diapers. Yep, no surprise that this eco-friendly Mom-to-be is going to try the cloth diaper route.
I say try- because I am 100% of the opinion that if something doesn't work with the baby- well, plans change- and we're just going to try our best. (at least that is what everyone keeps telling me).
Since we don't have a washer/dryer in our apartment, my Cloth Diapering requirements are a bit apartment living specific. Here's what I am looking for in a cloth diaper:
1. Minimal wash.
2. Minimal price.
Both one and two have made me realize that All in One diapers are out. And that I want a one size fits all diaper- rather than investing is different sizes.
3. Ability to use disposables- aka, I realize that sometimes I'll be on the go and want to use a disposable rather than a cloth insert. I realize I am eco-conscience, not eco-perfect.
4. Good ratings from other Moms.
What I've decided on: the bumGenius Flip Diaper Snap System.
From what I can tell- it is a system with an outer cover that can be wiped down if a little pee or poo gets on it, and then the outside cover can be used again. They have the option of inserts: organic, stay dry or disposables. And they are in pretty colors. I choose snaps instead of velcro because I hear the velcro can lose it's velcroness (is that a word?).
I think all in all it should cost us about $250 to get a whole system set up.
I will say that I am worried about the snap system. And I am not sure if I am going to use reusable or disposable wipes (again, eco-friendly not eco-perfect). I am also not going to invest in newborn size cloth diapers- so until this little Baby Berry is 10-ish pounds- we'll be investing in some disposables.
BUT I can't knock it until I try it.
I'll get back to you'll in 6 months or so.

So I've talked to my mom about this and she used cloth diapers on me when we lived in an apartment... and she said an apartment washer is a MUST. Apparently you can buy portable units that you can hook up to your sink and wash your diapers in there (some are washers AND dryers, but those are more expensive...the washer units are around $200). They're pretty small, but they're in unit and you won't get poop in a communal machine. Just a thought!
Cloth diapers are so interesting to me. Before several of the bees started having babies, I'd never even heard of them... I look forward to hearing how you like them
We're going the cloth diaper route too. And I'm with you on the losing the velcroness. :)
I think you'll love those...the bumgenius 4.0s are really similar and work great for us. The disposable option of the flips is so great, I've been thinking of trying them! Ours fit a little bit before 9 lbs...depends a lot on the thigh chunk factor ;)
Cloth is overwhelming at first but once you start you realize it's no big deal!
Kudos to you for attempting cloth! I hope it works, and you def. have the right crowd around you to make sure you're successful! :)
LOve, Love , love your post. We just recently ventured into the cloth diapering (cd'ing. It was overwhelming at first with all the choices and styles. We went with an all-in-one (AIO) style and it has worked very well for us. My son is going to be 1 this month and we just started cd'ing. I wish I had known how easy it really is and how much money I wasted on disposable. It is an upfront cost and an investment, especially if you know you want more children down the road. I hope your adventure with cd'ing is a good experience for you and baby. Good luck.
