So Day One was the most dramatic, but for the last few days we have been out of the house on Holiday so we should see huge changes when we get back. In fact, cross your fingers and toes- they should be done.
One big decision we had to make before we left- what color to stain the floors!!
Holy huge decision Batman!!
Our first decision was to go with a water based seal instead of oil. Our Contractor leans slightly to the oil side, but we could expect off gassing for a least a month. With a baby in the house that is no bueno.
So we are going with a water based sealant, which will have a bit less of a shine but no VOC. Perfect.
As for the stain, we realize that folks are leaning towards darker these days. But we are well aware that our living area gets little light as is, so our two choices were to keep the color as is, which has a more traditional amber feel. OR go lighter- see the lightest color sample. The lighter color is more contemporary and less 'of the era of the house' and the nail holes will show more.
Well, we're not ones to go traditional, so we're rolling the dice and going lighter. We are hoping that it brings more of that modern farmhouse vibe we love.
What color hardwoods do you like???
Oh. And I also wanted to show you the expanded opening from the kitchen to the living area:

Dark (really dark!) is my favorite wood color for a floor, but I think you're right to go light if you don't get a lot of natural light in the house. It should look great!
I'm personally always a fan of seriously dark floors, but light wood floors are so beautiful too! I can't wait to see what you choose!
Love the lightest color. Dark floors are my fav too, but I think in a room with little light, it would really limit how you can decorate/what you can put in there without making it feel like a cave. Good luck!!
