So this week, I am reviewing my absolute favorite purchases from the year. Things that I highly recommend.
I thought I'd start off with my current obsession: The Nook.
I am a reader, but with my Nook- I've become an obsessive reader.
First, when thinking about why I wanted an e-reader, I realize that I had one main reason: The Bus. Urg, the bus. I have taken public transit to work for almost a decade now, and as long as I have a book with me, I like it. I love engrossing myself into something, and when it's a good book- I actually look forward to my commute.
My one problem with my reading addiction and the bus- the SIZE of the book. Every now and then, I decide to read a disgustingly long book, and end up carting it all over the City for the weeks that follow.
So the Nook lightens my load and makes my commute that much easier. Plus, I have a super cute cover for it:
Second, why the Nook?? Well, I made Mr. Spice do most the research on this one, but three things stood out with the Nook. (1) Download anywhere at any time. (2) You can lend books to someone else who has the Nook. (3) You can download books from your local library for FREE. Music to my ears. Oh, and four, I like the color screen at the bottom- it allows me to still shop for books by their cover.
Honestly, it's the whole library thing that made me choose the Nook over the Kindle.
As for my favorite thing about the Nook besides the weight- instant gratification. Monday I downloaded a book while I waited for the bus, and as soon as I sat down on the bus- it was there and ready for me to read it. Talk about a book lovers dream.
Now for the downfalls of the Nook. I have come to find out that most books aren't lend-able. In fact, I don't think I can share any of the books I've bought yet. Also, I will admit that my expenditures on books have tripled since getting the Nook, but I've started being more savvy and shopping in the $5 and under section.
That said, since July, I've read 10 books. I feel like I am satisfying a really healthy habit and I find myself turning off the TV at night to curl up in bed with my Nook, oh, and Mr. Spice too.
How about you, do you e-read?

I went with the Kindle because I have a luddite-esque aversion to touchscreens and I knew there wouldn't be anyone else I could loan books with, but the free e-books at the library almost sold me. I love my Kindle, but I have to watch out how many books I buy. It makes book-shopping too much fun! The instant gratification is so awesome. Also, I love to be able to download free samples of books - then I can even go get them at the library if I don't want to pay for them. *guilty* Does the Nook have that feature? I can't remember. Anyway, I love e-reading!
Sounds like such a neat concept! I don't know too much about all the e-readers out there these days, but the Nook looks like a winner!
I haven't bought an e-reader at all which is funny since a friend of mine has been working on the Kindle for a few years. We don't usually buy books. We have a great library system here plus. I would want to share books with people. I feel like an e-reader would be great for all the traveling and the public transit commuting but I'm just not entirely convinced yet. It's the buying books part. I'd pay a few books for an e-book but I have a hard time paying $10 for a book I can't lend or donate when I'm done with it.
I have the Kindle app for my iPhone and LOVE IT! I still buy physical books from my favorite authors or for sets that I'm collecting. But I love having a book at my fingertips any time I have a few extra minutes. Plus Amazon offers free books, so I stock up on the ones that look interesting and always have something new to read. While some of them are total bombs, some have introduced me to new authors I absolutely love.
I need to read more books..period. I do read, but it's mostly news online, blogs and magazines. I'm wondering if an E-reader would help.
I have a Kindle and I love it! But if I had it to do again, I would buy the Nook. There is no color on the Kindle and even though it's only at the bottom--in the shopping section, I want it. Its hard to see on the Kindle what Amazon recommends for me based on past purchases! I definitely read more because I always have a variety of books at my fingertips. I still by real books too, but mostly of the design and decor variety!
