Obviously, Baby Berry's safety is of #1 importance to Mr. Spice and I.
So when the American Academy of Pediatrics came out last week saying 'no more bumpers.' Well, Mr. Spice laid down the law and told me that my dreams of making a super cute whale bumper are over.
Bummer. Mr. Spice is pretty set on not having a bumper ever- even when little Baby Berry is bigger.
Of course this sparked a discussion with my family- it seems that every few years guidelines are changed/become more stringent, and yes 99% of the time they are for the good. But as my MIL says- she was told to put her babies on their stomachs, and my Mom was told that formula is best (yes, I am a formula baby and I turned out sort of ok).
So I ask you, any thoughts in the no bumper debate?
PS I also chatted with my friend at Pottery Barn Kids- sounds like they will be focusing their energy on sheets and fancy crib skirts- no more bumpers from them either. Kinda crazy.
PPS Apartment Therapy Kids is already dishing out advice on what to do with your baby bumpers. This is pretty cute if you ask me.

I'm of the philosophy that most things won't kill your kid. I was a stomach sleeper and I survived well into adulthood (still sleeping on my stomach!). I've never heard of a baby dying due to baby crib bumpers. I also eat eggs and don't care one iota about the cholesterol either. I'm probably not a good one to ask about it because I lean towards the eye rolling side. When I watched Babies, I was all about the Namibian and Mongolian baby upbringing. :)
We've had bumpers from the time we moved Claire to her crib at about 3 months and we're glad for it! We know what the AAP recommends, but Claire is such a violent sleeper (she gets this from her dad...he used to knock over his crib when he was a baby!) that she would have surely hurt herself if not for the extra padding. We also knew that by the time she became mobile enough to potentially suffocate against the bumper, she had enough head and neck control to move away if needed. And now that she's even more mobile, we also know that she's too much of a chicken to try to do anything with the bumper to possibly cause strangulation or entrapment. Besides, our bumper has an adorable animal design that Claire likes to stare at and babble to while lying in her crib.
We spent a ton of money on a beautiful set from Restoration Hardware and took the bumper out as soon as HUT started really moving around (a few months in). He would smoosh his face close to it and I got super nervous. That being said, he can easily stick his limbs through his crib posts, which would result in a screaming baby when he couldn't figure out how to get them back out, so we opted for the breathable bumper (you can find it on Amazon) and haven't had a problem since!
